METRO REPORTER - 7th March, 2010

Baby left in plastic bag on mosque steps was assumed dead by police

A baby boy died after police officers in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent failed to notice he was still breathing.

The newborn was left on the steps for more than an hour as officers first called to the scene believed he was already dead.

On discovering their mistake, one shouted ‘get an ambulance!’. The infant was taken to hospital but died shortly after.

Said Ahmed, 64, from Shelton, who discovered the baby at the Makki Masjid mosque in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, said police took a look at the baby and assumed it was dead.

‘Inside the bag, resting on the baby, I was shocked to find a note that said ‘Sorry, please bury him,’’ he said. ‘After the first officer had looked in the bag no one checked it again – they just thought the baby had died.’

Law student Penelope Meadows, 21, who lives opposite, witnessed the events. ‘They put a tent over the body and seemed to be just going about their business,’ she said. ‘It looked as if they had assumed the baby was already dead. They looked panicked at discovering the baby was still alive, shouting into their police radios.’

An inquiry will now be conducted by the Independent Police Complaints Commission into Saturday’s incident.
